According to the latest report from Ofcom; UK media consumption is defined by diversity and multi-tasking.
2011’s annual Communications Market Report found people spend around 45 per cent of their time on a diverse range of new media from social networks, mobile phones, TV and radio. Indeed, the profile of people using these media has changed with the average demographic becoming older.
It is speculated that on average, people in the UK now spend around a quarter of their time on social networks, and watch an average of 3 hours 45 minutes worth of television.
With the introduction and inflated demand for Smartphone's, the number of text messages sent has quadrupled since 2004. The improved accessibility provided by Smartphone's has also impacted on those of us using hand held devices for Internet access with the 15-24 age bracket increasing by some 8 per cent and the 35-54 up 3 per cent since 2009. Rather unsurprisingly Facebook has become the most visited website by mobile/smart phone users making up a massive 45 per cent of mobile online time.
Television still proves to be the most popular media format in the evenings, but with the introduction of digital platforms such as BBC iPlayer, the popularity of online media can only increase. Indeed, in a recent survey, nearly a third of people with access to the Internet use sites such as iPlayer to view programmes missed during the course of the week.
These are just some of the headline figures from the report, but it highlights the demand for new media technology by consumers. With technology developing at such a rapid rate, new avenues to market are emerging each day. Business must embrace this, and learn to adapt with their customers by implementing intuitive marketing.
